Qinlan is a progressive schoolgirl born in the Guangxu period, and her love-hate relationship with her lover, Shusheng, and their sorrows and joys run through the whole novel. The first half of the novel is about Qinlan's life, love and family; the second half is about her daughter-in-law, Yi Zhen, who tells the story of Qinlan and Shusheng in her memories.
